Pam Davenport, communications officer and lead public information officer for the Salt Lake County Health Department, was awarded USHCAM’s 2015 Award of Excellence at its September 3rd luncheon. The program, hosted by ARUP Labs, recognized Pam for her innovative leadership in adopting social media and using technology to improve the Department’s service to the public.

In 2008 Pam oversaw the launch of Utah’s first online restaurant inspection database. Salt Lake County residents embraced the site immediately, and it received over 68,000 visits in just a few hours. When the server crashed from the unexpected load, Pam framed that technological problem as evidence that the department was delivering exactly what the public wanted; what could have been a negative media story instead turned into a positive piece about the department’s effort to be accessible and transparent.

As the health department’s primary public information officer, Pam has also led a number of crisis communication efforts over the years, including successful responses to the H1N1 flu outbreak in 2009, the Salt Lake County measles outbreak in 2011, and the public health concerns present at the 2002 Olympic Games. Pam’s responsibilities go beyond the medical side of public health, too, and include responding to environmental concerns in the county. In 2005, she helped orchestrate the media coverage surrounding the arrival of Katrina refugees to Utah, as well as the health department’s response to the Red Butte Creek oil spill in 2010.

USHCAM salutes Pam for her efforts to improve the health of Salt Lake County residents through enhanced public health communication!
